Ellipsoidal measuring equipment for magnetic field characterization

Our activities focus on the development of ellipsoidal measuring equipment for magnetic field characterization.  Knowledge of the spatial characteristics of magnetic fields is of central importance for numerous medical and technical applications, including magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Through the targeted placement of a defined number of magnetic field sensors in combination with the use of suitable mathematical models, efficient and precise measurement of (semi-)static magnetic fields is possible. Even magnetic fields of complex field generators can be recorded and analyzed as a complete volume.

 

Opportunity

Investigating the magnetic field topology in complex magnetic field generators, such as those used in medical imaging systems in particular, is a challenging task.  Increasing system complexity, e.g. due to non-linearities, makes conventional modeling and selective, time-consuming measurements difficult.  Our solution is a compact measuring system that works with sensors exclusively on an ellipsoidal surface and yet can capture a magnetic field volume in just a few milliseconds. There is no need for time-consuming adjustment of individual sensors and the results are visualized in real time via a user-friendly interface. The system therefore has great potential for research and development issues as well as for quality assurance.

 

Solution/Product description

The current prototype of our measuring device is designed as a modular system to enable quick adaptation to the specific measuring task. The measuring device currently offers a variable measuring range of up to ±300 mT at a measuring frequency of x measurements per second. To ensure the correctness of the measurement results, the associated software includes an automatic check of the raw data. Reference sensors can also be used for checking. Together with the evaluation and visualization software tailored to the measuring device, the measuring device offers a wide range of possible applications.
