Intelligent Systems for Medicine – Safe, Explainable and Practical
At Fraunhofer IMTE, data-driven and AI-supported solutions for medicine are developed. The focus is on clinically relevant applications – from digital assistance systems and training platforms to interoperable medical devices and digital health applications.
In the competence area of software, algorithms, and artificial intelligence, Fraunhofer IMTE works on the development of intelligent, safe, and explainable AI systems for medical applications. The combined expertise in mathematics, data science, software development, computer architecture, and health IT enables the handling of complex clinical issues.
At the core are AI-supported training systems for robotic surgery (e.g., in the LIROS project), digital health applications (DiGAs and DiPAs), and data-driven control concepts for ventilation and surgical assistance systems. The portfolio is complemented by virtualization and augmented reality methods to optimize medical training scenarios.
Edge computing solutions are also being developed, which allow the inference of deep neural networks directly on embedded systems. The entire development chain – from data collection and annotation to model training and norm-compliant deployment – is fully covered.
A special focus is on the safe and regulatory-compliant implementation of autonomous systems. For this purpose, digital models, technical simulators, and model-based testing procedures are used. In addition to technical feasibility, ethical and legal requirements for trustworthy AI are addressed, as outlined in the "Ethics Guidelines on Trustworthy AI" by the European Commission.
